What is the best resume template?

Looking for a resume template that is going to make your employers say "Wow!"? There is no holy grail of resume templates, but don't worry.

This doesn't mean that there aren't a few simple rules that you can follow when looking creating the best resume template. Everyone's resume is different. That's the most important thing. Your resume should look different, and stand out against those who are applying for the same job. However, it shouldn't look so different that it looks unprofessional. Here are a few tips that will help you construct the best resume template for you, while remaining within the guidelines of a proper, professional resume.

1. If you have Microsoft Word, Works, or iWork, you can start with a sample resume template.

This will show you the basics of a well designed resume. You can choose from among the three or four different templates, and pick the one that you are most comfortable with. Once you have used that template, you can fiddle with it and redesign it, within modest parameters to create the best resume template for you. Remember that almost everyone with a PC has Microsoft Word. These resume templates are the most frequently used templates on the market. These resumes should serve as an example, not the best resume template.

2. The best resume template should be on one page.

Typical Resumes include your name and address, your educational background, your work or volunteer experience, and your honors or awards. This all needs to fit on one page, and needs to be easily navigated. One of the biggest pitfalls is trying to cram too much text into one page, thus making the whole thing overwhelming and unreadable. Don't let this be you. If it isn't relevant to the job you are applying for, it doesn't need to be on your resume.

3. Stick to modest fonts.

The best resume templates do not use fonts that look too 'playful' or are too unreadable. However there are some fonts that add a flourish without looking too unprofessional. If your resume is written in Times New Roman, you may accent, say, the titles of your previous jobs with the font Book Antigua.
